The Port of Memphis or is better known as the International Port of Memphis is the 5th largest inland port in the United States. 95% of the industries working here are situated on Presidents Island. This island is the largest island on the Mississippi River that has 7, 500 acres, and the critical parts of this island were being sold by the City of Memphis and Shelby County, thus creating the second-largest inland port on the shallow draft portion of the Mississippi River. This international port envelops the Arkansas and Tennessee sides of the Mississippi River from river mile 725 to mile 740. This port has three different slack-water harbors: Pidgeon Industrial Harbor and McKellar Lake Harbor just south of downtown Memphis and Wolf River Harbor in the northern part of the city. Major industrial parks are included as well such as the Pidgeon Industrial Park and of course, the President’s Island. Products that are being shipped here are petroleum, tar, asphalt, cement, steel, coal, salt, fertilizers, rock & gravel, and grains. These cargoes are easily managed because of the port’s outstanding facility. In addition, they are in favor of constant improvements and developments in the port. Some of their projects include: the public terminal development that is in collaboration with the Watco Companies, the former navy property site improvement was planned to start its demolition with an anticipated letting in Spring 2021, the Hyosung Heavy Industries which is looking for a partner to further improve its company that could create more jobs in the area, and a public dock redevelopment was to provide versatility to the shipments handled in the port. And just last November 2020, a $200M Georgia rail terminal project was expected to improve connectivity between Memphis, Chicago, and Savannah. This just proves that the port will be further equipped for heavy intermodal transportation.

Shipping your container internationally?
You will need a cargo worthy container that has passed a survey inspection. Our network of IICL certified inspectors can provide an independent survey inspection that ensures that your “shipper owned container” is cargo-worthy/seaworthy.
They will provide a one-page inspection detailing any necessary repairs and will certify that your shipping container is structurally sound and good for international shipping.
They will apply a new CSC (Convention for Safe Containers) sticker showing that your container has passed. This sticker is good for 1 year.
If your container needs repair, the certificate will be applied once the necessary repairs are made.
