Introducing Toronto’s very first shipping container home: The Black Star. It is a unique hybrid structure designed and constructed by Carl Cassell and Ana Silva. The couple has created a unique living space by using three upcycled shipping containers as one-half of their house. The other part of their house is floating atop supporting pillars above the couple’s restaurant. This innovative living space is nothing short of fascinating! Almost all aspects of the building were completed single-handedly by Carl himself from welding to several DIY features making this abode truly remarkable.
After 9 arduous years of designing, getting the necessary approvals, and completing construction, the 3 bedroom 320 sqm home was finally ready for occupancy. The containers were modified outside of the building site with all cut-outs and spray foam insulation beneath them before being delivered to the location via crane lift.
The couple faced a substantial obstacle in attempting to insulate the containers and attach them to another structure, but even more challenging was finding a way to delicately lower them between two structures from an exceptionally tight alleyway. It took seven crane operators before they found one who would accept the job!
Shipping your container internationally? You will need a cargo-worthy container that has passed a survey inspection. Our network of IICL-certified inspectors can provide an independent survey inspection that ensures that your “shipper-owned container” is cargo worthy/seaworthy. They will provide a one-page inspection detailing any necessary repairs and will certify that your shipping container is structurally sound and good for international shipping .
They will apply a new CSC (Convention for Safe Containers) sticker showing that your container has passed. This sticker is good for 1 year. If your container needs repair, the certificate will be applied once the necessary repairs are made. For more information on shipping internationally Step-by-Step Guide to Shipping internationally
